What is ADHD?

ADHD is a developmental and behavioral disorder. It typically starts causing problems when children are of school age, leading to disruptive behavior that gets them into trouble.

ADHD symptoms may change as children age, but many of the problems they experience follow them into adulthood.

What symptoms does ADHD cause?

ADHD symptoms have two presentations. Some children have primarily inattentive symptoms, such as:

  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Constantly losing things
  • Rarely finishing tasks on time
  • Quickly getting bored
  • Problems keeping up in class
  • Being easily distracted
  • Difficulty following instructions
  • Not hearing when spoken to
  • Persistent daydreaming

The other set of ADHD symptoms causes hyperactivity (having endless energy and always being on the go) and impulsivity (doing things without thinking them through).

Signs of hyperactive/impulsive ADHD include impatience, problems sitting still, talking nonstop, and difficulty doing quiet activities. Children with this type of ADHD often find themselves in trouble at home and school for their behavior.

Some people have both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. This is called combined ADHD.

Most children display behaviors typical of ADHD at times. However, someone with ADHD exhibits them consistently for longer than six months.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

No lab test can diagnose ADHD, so you or your child need to meet with the Remart Medical team for an evaluation. Using their expertise, the team members rule out other causes for problem behaviors, such as psychiatric conditions, challenges at school, and alternative behavioral disorders.

Many children don’t receive a diagnosis and continue to struggle with ADHD in adulthood. The Remart Medical team diagnoses and treats children and adults of all ages with ADHD symptoms.

How is ADHD treated?

ADHD treatments combine medication with talk therapy:

Medication

Stimulant medications can be very helpful to people with ADHD. They activate areas of the brain that don’t work as they should when you have ADHD. This helps you manage your behaviors and emotions more successfully. Non-stimulant drugs and antidepressants are effective for some people.

Behavioral therapy

Behavioral therapy involves talking with your skilled Remart Medical therapist. They help you understand your condition and manage the behaviors causing you difficulties. You learn to identify feelings that trigger undesirable behaviors and control them, reducing the challenges you face in daily life.

If you or your child has ADHD symptoms, visit Remart Medical for expert diagnosis and treatment. Call the office or book an appointment online today.
